Backstage Weekly 74 - Adoptions tips, Pragmatic Engineer feature
By Jorge Lainfiesta • March 13th, 2023Hi y’all! It’s Wednesday, I know, but I was out sick after traveling to my home country, Guatemala. Anyhow, I’m thrilled to share this week:
- The feature column about Backstage published in the iconic Pragmatic Engineer newsletter
- An upcoming CNCF Webinar with tips for spreading Backstage in your org
- And, the new PuppetDB Catalog plugin.
Pragmatic Engineer’s Backstage feature
I’m personally a fan of Gergely’s work through the Pragmatic Engineer. He’s constantly pushing distilled knowledge with critical insights. At a readership of 300k+ tech professionals, he’s quite a voice to consider. I’m excited to share Pragmatic Engineer’s column on the Backstage we all love:
If you’re a Pragmatic Engineer subscriber, make sure not to miss out on this one. Gergely goes through what a Developer Portal is, how to get started, and even compares closed-sourced alternatives. Check it out!

CNCF Webinar: How do I make my developers use Backstage?
Once you’ve set up a POC of your Developer Portal using Backstage, the next crucial question is: how do I make my developers use it? In this webinar, Kasper Niessen (CNCF Ambassador and Lead Platform Architect at Lunar Bank) and Michael Pang (Product Manager at Relativity) will share tips on how they managed to wide-spread their Backstage instance across their organization.
New Catalog plugin: PuppetDB
If you’re using Puppet to manage your infrastructure, you can now bring entries from PuppetDB into you Backstage Catalog, thanks to tdabasinskas. This new entity provider can be used to ingest resources, which is useful when importing nodes from your PuppetDB into Backstage.
This plugin is available as @backstage/plugin-catalog-backend-module-puppetdb
, check out the README for installation details.
Talk to you next week!
